Blog Description

Fernweh is a wonderful German word that refers to the longing in your heart for travel and exploration when you've been home a bit too long. Join me in my wanderlust as I seek a cure for Fernweh.

In The Mood for Fabric Shopping

NYC and LA have Mood Fabrics and Berlin has Hüco. And, like Mood, if you don't know it's there, you'll probably never find it. I'd been there before with P, but this was my first foray on my own. Spoiler alert: I found it with no problem.

Hüco is located on the second floor (that's the third floor in American)

of what looks like a factory building (with no elevator).

There's a small sign on the building, but nothing on the gate or at the street.

I seem to remember from a previous visit with P that we had to ring the bell, but today the door was unlocked and I was able to go right in.

Like Mood, the "decor" consists of rows of industrial shelving piled high with fabric bolts. Like Mood, I saw some designer labels. However, Hüco is significantly smaller, at least when compared to the New York store.

I got there mid-afternoon as the sun was getting low in the sky and streaming through the windows. Shortly after I arrived, they pulled closed their patriotic curtains. An unfortunate side effect was that the colors of the fabric became slightly distorted by the filtered light.

I had brought some swatches from home with some specific projects in mind, but wasn't sure enough of anything, so I left empty handed. I took some photographic swatches for my own reference, and I may go back later... after I add up what I already have to declare.

On the way home, I stopped at another neighborhood bistro, the Eis Cafe, for Kaffeetrinken. Although Eis means ice cream, they also have pastries, coffee, etc.

I found a cozy nook in the back that I had all to myself while I relaxed and rested.

BTW... I went back to Extra Weit this morning and talked to the boss lady. My choices were an exchange or a gift certificate. So, after looking around some more, I decided to stick with what I'd already purchased. I should have known better and given myself time to "think about" my purchase, but I didn't, and that's that.
